COMMERCIAL EDUCATION.

CLASSES AT PUTARURU. Successful Commencement. Though only in its infancy, the secondary department of the Putaruru District High School is quite a lusty youngster and it gives promise of growing in usefulness as the days go by, as evidenced by the fact that a commercial course, embracing typewriting, shorthand and boolJceeping, was successfully launched on Monday. This adjunct to a secondary education is quite a new thing in district high schools, for early last year the Auckland Education Board, circularised the district high schools under its jurisdiction to the effect that these classes could be started provided suitable instructors and equipment wefe available. Classes were started at Morrinsville and Matamata among other places. Mrs. Smith, who is instructress Morrinsville and Matamata, has now included Putaruru in her itinerary, and there is a class of 18 pupils for shorthand and typewriting and 24 for bookkeeping. Speaking to a Putaruru Press representative, Mrs. Smith said the first day’s work, if any criterion, augured well for the success of the class. At present v shorthand and bookkeeping are being taught, typewriting being held up until a machine, the money for which has gone forward, arrives. There is need for other machines and such, would be highly desirable. The need for such a course must be apparent to all. There are a large number of pupils who are attending district high schools such as Putaruru who do not desire to try their luck at matriculation, for the taking of the commercial course in most instances debars them from sitting forthe university entrance examination. Public service entrance candidates find the acquisition of shorthand and typing a decided advantage to their nrospects of securing employment the Civil Service. The commercial class at the Putaruru school will have the best wishes of all who have the interests of education at heart.
