MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MAY MEETING. The May meeting of the Matamata County Council, held at Tirau on "Wednesday, was attended by Crs. J. "W. Anderson (.chairman, Tirau), C. T. Morriss (Putaru-u), G. Middleton (Maungatautari), J. Moir (Peria), P. Dee (Te Poi), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. S. Wilson (Matamata) and J. Bruce (Karapiro). Also in attendance were Messrs C. I'\ E. Barton (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald ( engineer). Leave of absence was granted Cr. i W. H. Allan (Okoroire), who was attending a farmers’ 1 conference. Lewis and Dallimore asked the consent of the council to the talcing of a piece of land 1 acre 0 roods 15 perches for the purpose of McKinnon’s road.—Consent granted. Pollett’s Road. Lewis and Dallimore made a similar request in regard to Pollett’s ' road. —Consent granted. Power Board Representation. The Public Works Department wrote in reference to representation of Putaruru Town Board on the Thames Valley Electric Power Board, stating that after thorough investigation of the statistics appertaining to each constitutent district in the area of supply it had been decided that no alteration in the present allocation of members was justified.— Received. An Urgent Matter. Cambridge Borough Council wrote in reference to Karapiro bridge, submitting a report from its bridge committee and stating that in view of the condition of the bridge and urgency of the matter, they were ap-

plying for a subsidy from the Main Highways Board, and asking that the county engineer examine it and if necessary a conference between the contributing bodies be held. Received, the engineer stating that he had inspected the bridge and it | was a matter of urgency. “ Section Goes Begging.” The Bank of New Zealand, Matamata, offered a section 10 x 1966.3 links, as a gift to the council, as the bank had no use for same, the council to pay the transfer fees. The council decided to thank the bank for its offer, but suggested “hat the bank offer it to the Hungahunga Drainage Board.

Nationalisation of Roads. The Tauranga County Council acknowledged the council reply to the Tauranga council’s circular, and approved of the Matamata council’s suggestion contained therein. The whole matter would be presented to the Prime Minister with copies of the various county councils’ views on the subject.—Received.

Buckland Road. Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., advised | that Buckland road was badly grad- l ed, and he had advised the Minister 1 of Public Works accordingly. If the council made proposals in connection with tl.’S work he (Mr. Clinkard) would be pleased to support same.—lt was decided to notify Mr. Clinkard that the council had the matter in hand. Speeding" Cars. The Putaruru Chamber of Commerce wrote pointing out the excessive speed of service cars, and asking that a strict lookout be kept with a view to a more careful use of the road being observed.—The Chamber is to he adrised that the inspector was doing his best in the | direction indicated. Leamington Request. George E. Suisted, of Leamington, asked permission to shift his fence further out to the edge of the road. —Left in the hands of the riding member and the engineer to deal with. A Tirau Corner. I The Auckland Automobile Asso- | ciation -wrote pointing out that re- | peated representations had been : made to the association to improve the visibility of the comer of

the Putaruru - Rotorua - Tirau road, near the Tirau tennis courts. Trees badly obstructed the view, and presented a real danger to motorists. The letter asked the council to exercise its authority and have the trees removed.—The matter was left to the riding member and the engineer to attend to. Waitete Bridge. Cr. Middleton and the engineer t were authoi'ised to meet the Waipa I County Council with a view to discussing the proposal to provide a bridge over the Waitete stream giving access to Arapuni. Mati Road Reserve. Cr. Moir stated that complaints had been made in regard to the state of a council reserve on the Mati road. It was decided to notify the lessees i that they must comply with the terms of their lease and keep the section clean.
