Okoroire.

GOLF CLUB CUP. History of the Trophy. One of the oldest golf trophies in the Auckland province is probably the Okoroire Golf Cup, donated to 1 the club in 1908 by Mr. Bailey, of Okoroire, for open competition, the conditions providing that it should be won twice in succession or three times at intervals to become the personal possession of the successful competitor. > The first winner of the cup was Mr. J. B. McFarlane, of the Middlemore Golf Club, Auckland, and now a veteran of the game. Between then and 1915 it was won by players many of whom have since gone out of the competitive ranks. The competition in those days was always held at Easter and it was a tournament that always attracted players from all parts of the Auckland pro- | vince. In 1915 it was won by Mr. jE. A. Wilson, of Waihi. The Great I War intervening, the competition ceased and during the war the Okoroire Hotel was destroyed by fire I and the golf club went out of existence, the links being converted into a dairy farm. About three years ago—a new hotel having been built—it was decided to revive the game and the settlers themsalves ploughed un the. area originally used by the club and put it down in grass, suitable for a golf links. The noted golf course architect, Mr. Redhead, then laid out j a new nine-hole course and once j again the club flourished. In Nov- I ember of last year the secretary wrote to Mr. Wilson, in whose pos- I session the cup had remained since | 1915, advising him that the competi- j tion ’for the Okoroire Cup was to be j revived and requesting him to return i the trophy.

This year’s competition, as previously announced in the Record, -vas won by Mr. D. Mclsaac, of Hinuera.
