HALL AND RATEPAYERS. Annual Meeting. There was a fair attendance of residents at the annual meeting of the Hinuera Hall and Ratepayers’ held on Wednesday, in local hall. Mr. D. Mclsaac occupied the chair, and the meeting was noteworthy for the harmonious spirit that prevailed, and the speed with which the business was transacted. In a short report on the past year’s work the chairman stated that the executive had put most of their energies into reducing the overdraft, with a view to relieving Sr. Settle of his responsibility to e bank. In this, assisted by the ladies of the district, they had been most successful, and he thought that in reducing the overdraft from £SOO j to £73 in a little over two years i their efforts would compare very favourably with any similar community in New Zealand. In view of the satisfactory position disclosed, he was pleased to announce that the liank had relieved Mr. Settle of his responsibility as guarantor. In concluding, the speaker paid a tribute to the work of the secretary and treasurer. ;

. Balance-sheet. The balance-sheet as submitted by the treasurer showed receipts totalling £392 18s 3d, for the year-end-ing April 30 last. The main items in this total were: Meetings, £6; s' carnival and bazaar, £205 2s 7d; dances, £4O 19s 4d; pictures, £29 10s; hall hire, £2l 9s; balance in hand, £73 8s 9d. On the expenditure, side ‘overdraft accounted for £346 Is 7d, and bank charges and interest £23 55.. report and balance-sheet were "Urth adopted with acclamation. Replying to Mr. Hawke, the chairman stated that the membership of the hall - totalled 16, including three ladies. The speaker commented that- it was a most deplorable state of affairs.

Election of Officers. ; During the, election of officers Mr. P. Hawke stated that as there appeared to be no limit to the number of members of the committee, he suggested that sufficient be elected to form a separate executive to look after ratepayers’ interests. The conconstitution combined the two interests—the hall and ratepayers—therefore it was the only way that they could look after the ratepayers’ interests. In view of the fact that the main road was . shortly to be bitumenised, and there was talk of forming a separate riding, he thought it was essential to elect some members to look after ratepayers’ interests. The chairman suggested it might simplify matters if the two committees were elected separately. ■After Some discussion it was decided to combine both committees, and the following were then elected: I—Messrs.1 —Messrs. Mclsaac, Settle, Hopkins, iafcTis, Oates, Main, Brown, Hawke, and Roe. I The following were elected to the ladies’ committee: —Mesdames Mentiess.'' Settle, Swann, Tisch, Roe, Hates and Misses 'Germann and Tisch. Mr. Settle, of Te Poi, was appointed auditor. Further appointments made were: Chairman, Mr. D. Mclsaac; secretary, Mr. C. Brown; treasurer, Mr. Tisch. Appreciation. 1 A hearty vote of thanks and appreciation for the splendid work done during the past year was moved by Mr. Hawke and carried with acclamation. Mr. Hawke stated that the settlers deeply appreciated the action of Mr. Settle in acting as guarantor at the so that their hall could be enlarged. He considered that it would an easy matter to wipe out the .-.,11 amount now remaining on overdraft, as interest charges would reduced. The hall was a

great asset to the district and every ratepayer should, in view of tne wonderful shewing made by the committee, become a member. There were several improvements necessary, more especially to the grounds, and he would like to see a workingbee arranged for. At the conclusion of the general meeting, a dainty supper, which was greatly appreciated, was handed round by the ladies. Executive Meeting. At the first meeting of the new executive of the Ratepayers’ Association, Mr. H. Main was elected chairman, and Mr. P. Hawke secretary. A letter was read from Mr. P. Dee, councillor for the Te Poi riding, in which he stated that there was a general opinion amongst ratepayers that some ridings were badly cut up, and that there was room for two more. Te Poi desired to be self-contained with the Waihou river as the boundary, while another riding was possible with Hinuera township as the centre. If returned, the writer promised to mention the matter at the first meeting of the new council.

Mr. Hawke suggested that Mr. Dee be informed that the association had now been resuscitated, and would strongly support the suggestions made. He proposed that Mr. Dee be invited to meet the executive to exchange ideas and discuss various matters relating to roads, bridges, etc. . Mr. Hopkins remarked that Hinuera was at the tail end of three ridings. Mr: Main stated that it was the opinion they did not get justice at their end. Mr. Hawke’s proposal was then unammi utlj agreed to.
