DEHORNING CATTLE.
MIXED VIEWS. MorrinsviUe Farmers. Conflicting opinions were in evidence at Saturday’s meeting of the MorrinsviUe branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, when consideration was given to a remit providing for the compulsory dehorning of all stock over IS months of age. Mr. M. E. Barrowelough said IS months was too young —in fact even two years was not too old. Mr. Carter said it should be compulsory to attend to all calves with caustic soda. He considered dehorning was cruel. Mr. J. E. Leeson said it should be left to the discretion of the farmer. If it paid him to dehorn, as the speaker thought it did, let him dehcrn ; otherwise he should please himself. Mr. P. S. Philpott thought it would be unwise to dehorn all cattle, especially show bulls. Mr. Fisher said that by properly cutting the horns at two years old stumps would not grow. Mr. Topham : They should be cut as close to the skin as possible. A member pointed out that compulsory dehorning was principally for stock being trucked. The branch decided not to support the remit.
