PUTARURU CLUB. The handicap pairs was brought to a finality during the week-end, resulting in a win for Messrs. J. Campbell and W. Yandle. Scores:— Semi-final: Hollard and Palmer (ser) 14 v. Campbell and Yandle (15) 36. Final: I-ludson and Francis (9) 25 v. Campbell and Yandle (15) 40. The win was very popular, both players being first year men. Yandle played exceptionally well, and bids fair to make a name in the club. He was chosen lead in the tournament rink that were the runners-up at Okoroire, his play being outstanding on that occasion, whilst Campbell had previously won the novice singles. The game was more interesting than the scores indicate. Ted Hollard, the local champion, was compelled to build his head with the idea of big scores, through either driving or trailing kitty. He had things all his own way several times for sixes and sevens but “ Bill’s ” last bowl invariably turned out to be a kitty kisser and turned the tables. The final was also a good game but the winners were too good on the day. They did not even require their handicap, which showed that I: and’e can now be classed as one of Putaruru’s leading players. During the afternoon Mesdames landle, Palmer and Davis dispensed a beautiful afternoon tea, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and fittingly brought to a close the best season the local dub has had.
The following is a list of the winners of the competitions : Novices’ singles (first and second years), J. Campbell ; handicap singles, T. F. Snell ; championship singles, E. Hollard ; handicap pairs, J. Campbell and W. Yandle. REVIEW OF SEASON. The bowling season has now closed and a review of the season and prospects for the next is here given by “ Observer.” The club has boasted of about 23 playing members, of whom about 15 have been keen and played regularly. The green has been better than in previous years, playing very true, though not fast, A good topdressing" will improve it wonderfully. During the season the club has bad visits from the Matamata, Tirau and Okoroire clubs, and good close games have resulted. For the most part players have been keen, but lack of enthusiasm regarding local competitions resulted in these being unduly prolonged. It is suggested that these competitions be commenced much earlier next season, with a time limit on each match. After the competitions are completed much more enjoyment can be derived from playing for the roosters and ferns. This season these trophies interfered with the other matches early in the season and were shelved later
The club was not represented at Cambridge this season, owing to late application. This is regrettable, as the club now possesses quite a number of good players, and tournament experience is very beneficial.
Prospects for the coming season are rosy. Already there are three new players for registration, and “ Observer ” would like to see all members try to find one new member each. By helping the club the members are helping themselves, and the more members the greater the enjoyment for all.
