MAMAKU HIGHWAY.
BAN ON BUSES. The Eotorua Bus Company applied to the Matamata County Council on Friday for permission to use the Mamaku bush main highway, which is classed as a fifth-class road, for the conveyance of passengers from Eotorua to Arapuni. The maximum load of any bus was stated to be 31 tons, which was the weight permitted on fourth-class roads. The company was under contract with the Bailway 1 Department to convey passengers from Putaruru to Arapuni, and also- ran twice a week from Eotorua to Arapuni with sightseers. The letter stated that the Eotorua people had contributed £IOOO in cash towards the cost of this road and that the company, in conjunction with others, paid heavy traffic fees for the reasonable use of the highways. It was inconsistent with the users of main highways to close a small portion to the medium passenger bus. The chairman said the company was using the railway trip as a lever. If they ran empty to Putaruru they would not be infringing. He understood they had done these trips before.
The engineer said they had been running through the summer, doing what they were now asking permission for, through the inspector warning them. On the motion of Cr. Allen it was decided not to entertain the application.
