LAND SETTLEMENT.

COUNTY COUNCIL ALIVE. Delegate for Conference. That the Matamata County Council is alive to the importance of land settlement to the south of the county was emphasised at the last meeting, when, following a communication I from the New Zealand Lands Settlement League, which said a conference was to be held in Wellington next Tuesday, the council decided to be represented. , Cr. Cox said he thought it was an important matter so far as the council was concerned as the T.T.T. line was involved in their problems. If they could get the league interested in the block just outside the county they would stand a better chance of getting the timber off their roads. Cr. Wilson: Any ragwort? (Laughter.)

Cr. Cox : No, it has not blown in yet. (Laughter.) Cr. Anderson thought there was a great deal in what Cr. Cox had said. Cr. Allen suggested that Cr. Cox represent the county. Cr. Cox replied that he was not particularly keen to go to Wellington, but the problem of the T.T.T. line was wrapped up .with land settlement, and the county should hold its end up as against other areas. On the motion of the chairman Cr. Cox was appointed to represent the council, the mover remarking that no one knew the problem better than he did.
