“ I am more that satisfied that we can get good roads by carrying out reconstruction works in the winter and tar-sealing the surface in the summer,” said the county engineer, Mr. B. H. Horner, at Monday’s meeting of the Piako County Council. Mr. Horner pointed out that surfacing by the pentration system was regarded by the Public Works Department as construction, and as such only a £1 for £1 subsidy was made. By the other system, which he regarded as being the equal of penetration for country roads, a subsidy of £2 for £1 was paid, and there was a likelihood that £3 for £1 would be available.

A motor hog was nearly responsible for a serious accident on the Tirau road the other day while passing a young lady rider on a restive horse. Despite the fact that the horse was showing signs of fear the driver kept his lorry going at top speed, and the flapping of an insecure tarpaulin caused the horse to play up in terror. Luckily the rider was experienced, having won prizes at numerous shows, but the lorryman was not to know that, and with less experience at the reins a serious accident might have occurred.
