THE C.O.D. SYSTEM

GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE. Mr. F. Lye, M.P., Explains Position. An explanation of the attitude of the Government towards the cash on delivery system in operation in the post office was given by Mr. Fred Lye, M.P., at a meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evening. Mr. Lye said he was one of a committee of 21 appointed by the party before the election to draw up the policy to be followed. While it was impossible to incorporate every plank in a policy, which is only a general system of measures, the conference gave sympathetic hearing to Mr. Lye when he advocated the abolition of the C.O.D. system and agreed that it was grossly unfair that the Post and Telegraph Department should be the instrument of so unfair a trading system. An assurance was given that the party would, if given an opportunity, fight to have the scheme eradicated.

Mr. Lye added that there was a move among branches of the Farmers’ Union to have the system continued, and that organisation had commenced against its abolition. He could hardly understand this attitude. He felt sure that steps would be taken in the near future to prevent a continuation of the C.O.D. system. The chamber decided to thank the Government for its attitude towards the C.O.D. system, and also for its stated intention of abolishing State interference in private enterprise.
