MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

PUTARURU SITTING. The usual bi-monthly sitting of the above court took place in Putaruru on Friday, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., presiding. Wanton Mischief. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Tiepa, Mary Hoko and two Maori maidens under sixteen years of age appeared to answer charges of pulling vegetables and shrubs from various gardens, and also stealing- a roast of beef, on New Year’s Eve. According to the police the natives concerned indulged in carol singing and committed most of the mischief in gardens belonging to residents who were absent on holiday. It was also stated that the Maoris retorted to one lady who remonstrated with them that “it was nothing to what she’d get next year.” The damage had been made good and the beef paid for. The Magistrate admonished and dismissed the two juveniles, and fined each of the others 12s and costs on each of three charges, remarking that if this happened next year the culprits would be sent to gaol. Unregistered Firearm. An Arapuni youth, under the age of 16 years, who was charged with ■ using a pea rifle, was admonished and discharged. A further resident of Arapuni, for not registering a rifle within the ; specified period, was ordered to pay " 10s costs, the case being dismissed ’ under section 92 on this condition. Military Uniform. ■ W. G. Penny, for failing to return ■ his military uniform at Whangarei, * was ordered to pay £2 15s 9d, the cost . of same, plus £1 Is costs. ' Civil Cases.
