PROFITABLE FARMING.

A PUTARURU EXAMPLE. What can be crane on a small farm in the Putaruru district is strikingly evidenced in the returns supplied by Mr. W. Proctor, who is farming a small section on the Waotu road. Mr. Proctor has 50 acres of grass land, six acres of which lie has enclosed foi* hay. 4 i Mr. Proctor milked 14 cows October and his cream statement shows that 5873 pounds of butterfat (first grade) . were supplied. At Is 'lid per pound, plus 'id for superfine, this totalled £4l 12s 8d for the month. For November 718 pounds of butterfat were sent, the cheque anlounting to £SO 10s 4d. For the first 10 days of December 19 cows, five of which' are two-year heifers, produced 566 i pounds of butterfat, or an equivalent of £sl for the month. •

Mr. Proctor’s , pastures are composed of Poverty Bay ryegrass, timo■thy and clover, with very little cocksfoot. The' paddocks are so arranged that the cows are never in the same | paddock twice running, and each padI dock has a spell of three days. I On the figures given above the returns for December should be in the vicinity of 800 pounds of butterfat, which at the present - payout equals a return of £67, or £3 per tow. t; On Mr. Proctor’s farm the flush ■ period extends for six months—Octo- « ber to March. An interesting; feature in connection with the above returns from this herd of 19 cows is that they are practically the same as those obtained by another farmer in the district from a herd of 60 cows.
