WAITITI BRIDGE.

SETTLERS’ OUTLET. To Putaruru and Arapuni. Mr. J. E. Makgill, Epsom, wrote to the Matamata County Council at its last meeting stating that the facts in regard to the Waititi bridge as set out by the Public Works Department were generally Correct, but that there was no doubt that the crossing which was made by settlers was used by the Fublic Works construction men to quite a considerable extent. Public Works lorries and tractors had used the bridge and some of the staff had of ed it with ,their cars. The bridge therefore was quite an efficient cross ing on what was an open road until closed in March of this year by the Department, after the crossing hi d washed away by the diversion of the river. The matter was of considerable importance to settlers, as if the road were open they could use the outlet to Putaruru station with considerable saving on the cartage of goods and manures. The settlers thought the Public Works Department should provide as good an outlet as they had before and the council’s aid in the matter was again sought. Cr. Cox: It’s a difficult problem. Cr. Judd: What spoils the case is the betterment question. It was the building of Arapuni which created the desire to get out that way in ord" to sell potatoes, etc. It seems Hie only way is to get a Public Works grant and even then the matter is complicated on account of the fact that the bridge site is in Waipa I county. I Cr. Dee suggested that Waipa be j asked to- build the bridge. | Cr. Anderson:-They wont; it’s only | for a few of the settlers at the top end.

Cr. Cox: An alternative is the transfer of a portion of Waipa county to onr county,; Cr. Judd thought that would complicate matters too much. Cr. Cox: Waipa will never apply for the grant. Cr. Judd: I’ll have a talk to Mr. Civil and see what, we can arrange. The matter then dropped.
