PETROL TAX.
BOARD WANTS SHARE. , Putaruru Discussion. A letter received by the Putaruru Town Hbard from the Hamilton Borough Council suggested that the reason why'-foe magistrate placed town boards onlihe samfe basis' as boroughs in regard torhe allocation,of heavy traffic fees was that owifig to the areas and population in towmdistricts being somewhat limited the mileages travelled by vehicles licensed by town
boards were more in keeping with the amounts the town boards were entitled tb receive under the present order than under the previous one. Mopt to’Svn boards received assistance from the Highways Board funds, but con-’ sideration of such assistance, under the present . legislation, could have little weight wfien allocations of license fees were being made. The chairman pointed out that town boards received no share of the petrol tax, while boroughs did. There was little justification for this, for some independent boards were as large as some: boroughs, while the bulk of traffic passing through a town like Putaruru came from outside. Some bodies had only one through main road but Putaruru had.two. In the opinion it was a matter the board, should look into and if necessary circularise other town boards on the point. Mr. Bent : I agree we should most certainly ‘ go into the matter.
Other members agreed and the chairman was authorised to report on the matter at the January meeting.
