EXPERIMENTS WITH FLAX.
BEST MILLABLE LEAF. The manager of the Thames Valley Fibre Company’s mill at Tahuna, Mr. Firth, is conducting some very interesting experiments to determine which is the best flax for cultivation for the purpose of milling. He has planted an area with practically every known variety of New Zealand phormium tenax, the plants coming from all parts of the Dominion. Some were raised from seed and others ■ grown from roots.
The experiment will take about three years to complete, as the plants have to grow to full size, when the leaves will be cut, weighed, milled, weighed again, scutched and the finished fibre finally weighed. The plants have already been growing nearly a year, and so far the variety showing most promise is a blackedged leaf from the hills of Lyttelton, which is also found near Christchurch.
