LUXURY —WITH A CATCH.
“Edmonton Board of Guardians recently opened new casual wards, which cost! £25,000, and which are fitted with electric bells and shower baths. Ratepayers’ association protested against what they described as extravagance and luxury. The tramps are fighting shy of the new luxury wards” (says the Manchester Guardian).
‘A correspondent, who inquired why this was, was told by an official, ‘ln the old wards we had as many as 97 casuals in one night, and some had to sleep on the floors of the corridors During the fortnight that the new wards have been open the biggest number in one night has been 41. They do not like our new rule that every tramp must! stay for two nights This means that they must do a day’s work. The other night a score or more of casuals, waiting to come in. walked away when they were told they would be kept for two nights. I doubt whether all of them like the shower baths. One man said, “It’s like slow murder”—and we had a job to get him to complete the bath.’ ”
