HOUSE-BREAKING.
PETTY THEFTS. Complaints have been made that some person or persons have been taking advantage of the absence of householders from Putaruru during the past few weeks and ransacking rooms during the day time for stray cash. In one case a few shillings were taken from a baby’s money box and in another thirty shillings was taken from the box of a boarder. A five pound note which was in another room was overlooked. The petty thief showed some system in that neither of the two boxes was damaged, the money being obtained by the simple expedient of tipping up the boxes. In one box the exact amount deposited was known, as certain sums were put away on certain days, but in the other only an estimate can be made. The displacement of a lot of bottles from a shelf in the kitchen to a bench first aroused suspicions, and it is evident that the intruder made a fairly thorough search for coin of the realm. A sack of potatoes was missed from this house some time ago, though on this occasion the thefts seem to be the work of juveniles. The police are investigating the matter.
