“AN IMPOSITION.”
TIRAU WATER RATE.’ 9 Resident’s Complaint. “ A few days ago I received a demand for rates which included an item of £2 18s 4d for water which is not available,” wrote Mr. S. A. T. Hamlin, of Tirau, to the Matamata County Council. “Am I not right in demanding that you, on your part, shall bring the water to my boundary when I should certainly avail myself of it? Until such time I consider the demand for water rate an imposition,” the letter concluded. The chairman explained that it was a peculiar case. The writer purchased the far end of a , block to which water was delivered. Cr. Cox stated there were no funds from which the reticulation ceuld be done. rCr. Wilson: I suppose he knew there was a water rate on the pro"perty when be purchased it?
The chairman mentioned that the same might apply to many other properties if a paddock was sold. Cr. Darby: I think we should point out there is no obligation on the county to supply water to him. Cr. Allen stated it was a bit hard as Mr. Hamlin had put £6OO worth of improvements on his property and would pay water rate on that.
Cr. Cox: It isn’t a supply rate; it’s | for interest on lean. | The chairman: When the loan was j first raised Messrs. Keane and Rose i practically paid the lot. There were mostly vacant sections around. Cr. Judd: He can connect up with the present pipe to the property. Cr. Cox: You can only get funds to reticulate by altering the interest rate to a supply rate. The clerk stated he had gone into the question, and a supply rate at the moment would just about 'pay the interest and little more. On the motion of Crs. Judd and Wilson it was decided to reply that the council was under no obligation to give a supply, but that there was no objection to the writer connecting up at his own expense.
