A process of steam sterilisation of the soil is now being carried out at certain tomato houses at Nelson (says an exchange). Paying a visit to the gardens recently, Sir John Russell mentioned that steam sterilisation was discovered at Totnamstead, but some of the methods used in Nelson were new to hln and an improvement on those used elsewhere. About half the motorists who are charged in the Magistrate’s Court with having left their cars unlighted contend that the light must have been switched off during their absence by some one with the malicious intention of bringing them trouble at the hands of the traffic officers or the police (says the Wellington Post). And about 95 per cent- of those who offer this explanation have it brought home ,to them that they, and they alone, are responsible for the proper lighting of their cars. It is perhaps unfortunate in some cases, but to make fish of one offender and flesh of another is not the most equitable way of dispensing justice. “Am I responsible if someone turns off the lights?” asked one such motorist in the court of Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. “ I am afraid you are,” replied Mr. Salmon. “ Some mischievous boys sometimes turn off the lights, but the owners nevertheless are penalised.” A nominal penalty was imposed.
