Nitrate of Soda.

DANGEROUS FERTILISER. Fanner’s Trenchant Comment. “ Although we are leading in topdressing we have still a lot to learn,” said Mr. T. Prowse, president of the Matamata branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, in reference to an address by Mr. W. G. Wild, of the Department of Agriculture. Mr. J. W. Simpson commented that nitrate of soda dressing was well known in England, where he had seen it many years ago, but it was of no use to the practical farmer. It was all right for the first year or two, but was no good after that. When a farmer was observed using that dressing it was usually predicted that he would be going off his farm. An instance was also -quoted in regard to the use of sulphate of ammonia, where a farmer using it found that his test went down, but rose again when a phosphatic manure was applied.
