Valedictory. I Between 60 and 70 residents at- | tended at Mr. and Mrs. W. Hetheri ington’s residence on Friday night | for a farewell function tendered to Mr. A. F. and the Misses Barden. Mr. W. Hetherington presided and had the pleasure of making presentations to the guests. To Mr. Barden he handed a heavy travelling rug, to Miss Barden a teaset, and to Miss Margaret Barden a solid leather travelling case. Mr. Hetherington said the Barden family had been good settlers for over 22 years. They had been through the early troubles but had been good neighbours. The speaker said that personally he was losing some of his best, if not his best, friends. He voiced the feeling of the whole district when he stated his regret at Mr. and the Misses Bardens’ departure from the district. (Cheers.) In responding, Mr. Barden gave some reminiscences of life at Tirau when he first arrived here. During the evening the following items were rendered : Songs, Miss Kilbride and Messrs. F. Rose and R. Naysmith ; recitations, Messrs. McCambridge and W. Craig ; pianoforte solo, Mrs. Bishop ; cornet solo, Mr. A. Bragg ; violin solo, Mrs. Litchfield ; instrumental trio, Mesdames Bishop and Litchfield- and Mr. Bragg. Mr. Barden recently sold his Tirau ■ property to Messrs. I-Cinnear and Young and gave possession on Wednesday. He and his daughters will live in retirement at Cambridge. Obituary. Rev. W. T. Brabyn has received the sympathy' of a large number of residents of Tirau and Putaruru in connection with the death of his father, who died at Dunedin on Sunday night. Rev. Brabyn left on Monday to attend the funeral. The late Mr. Brabyn was a retired engineer and was 73 years of age. He was for many years special engineer for the Railways Department.

Spinsters’ Dance. The Tirau spinsters will hold their Leap Year dance on Thursday next.
