MATAMATA SUPPORT.
FOR CHAMBER'S PROPOSAL. Enquiry Favoured. In a letter to the Matamata County Council the Putaruru Chamber of .Commerce thanked the council for its stand in the matter of asking for an enquiry into the question of tregplanting on land suitable for dairying.
The chamber further stated that it was asking for a Government enquiry into the classification of pumice land for settlement and other purposes. Cr. Darby thought the council should identify itself with the chamber in the matter, and he offered to start propaganda to educate public opinion at his own expense, provided the council indicated its sympathetic attitude towards his proposal. Crs. Rollett and Bruce urged caution in case the council was loaded with heavy costs as a result of the commission of enquiry. Cr. Cox pointed out that he understood the chamber considered the matter was a serious public question, and that the costs should be borne by the Government. After a somewhat lengthy discussion it was agreed, on the motion of Crs. Darby and Cox, that the council express its sympathy with the proposal of Cr. Darby, when he offered to start at his own expense, propaganda to awaken public opinion to the danger of planting potential dairying land, by commercial bodies, with forest trees. /
It was further agreed, on the motion of Crs. Darby and Allen, to unanimously support the action of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce in its advocacy of an enquiry being made by the Government into the classification of t 'mice lands.
