THE PUTARURU PRESS . ’Phone 28 - - - P.O. Box 44 Office -- - Oxford Place THURSDAY, JULY 12, 1928. PUTARURU LOANS.

PLEASING information is to hand this week tnat at a very early date the Putaruru-Arapuni road will be gazetted a main highway. A recommendation to this eifect is now being forwarded to Wellington from the No. 2 District Highways Council, following which it is confidently expected that the Main Highways Board will approve the ' recommendation and authorise the usual notice forthwith. This will enable the Town Board' to proceed with its full loan scheme, the main road portion of which has been held up as it carries a subsidy from the Highways Board and because consent for the work must be first obtained.

The engineer to the board has already set to work to collect the necessary data for formulating the plans, and the present intention is to couple the board’s work with that of the Matamata County Council, which proposes to bituminise its section, in order to secure better tenders for the job. As the cost of the combined work will total anything from £15,000 to £20,000 the gain by this procedure will be obvious. So far as .can be seen at the moment there is every prospect of the work being commenced this summer, though it may be advisable to omit a portion of the work for the time being owing to the heavy carting which will' necessarily have to be done in carrying out the county portion of the work.

The delay has to some extent been exasperating, but it has been solely caused by circumstances over which the Town Board has had no control, and now that there are signs of immediate activity it is to be hoped that matters will proceed smoothly until the full amount, covering considerably over £IO,OOO, has been spent.
