PRESENTATION.
TO MRS. F. W. A. HANDMAN. On Friday, June 12, the ladies of Arapuni entertained Mrs. F. W. A. Handman to afternoon tea, there being about 60 present. Several others sent apologies for unavoidable absence. The party met in the social hall, which was kindly lent by Mr. E. J. Darby for the occasion. On behalf of those present Mrs. R. McEwan presented Mrs. Handman with a handsome travelling rug and a set of greenstone-handled afternoon teaspoons. In making the presentation Mrs. McEwan stated that they were gathered together to show their appreciation of the many kindly acts performed by Mrs. Handman during the 34 years she had been in Arapuni. They were not actually saying good-bye, as it was still uncertain when their guest would be leaving the district, but were simply showing the esteem in which she was held and marking the occasion with a gift. They sincerely hoped Mrs. Handman would not “ lock the present away,” as was sometimes done, but would make good use of it. (Applause.) . • s
Mrs. Handman feelingly replied, stating that it came as a great surprise to receive such a handsome present. She had spent a most happy time in Arapuni, and the people had always responded to her appeals for assistance in a most ready manner. She felt she could not say more but wished it to be understood that she would treasure the gifts in remembrance of the happy days spent in Arapuni. The afternoon closed with the singing of “ For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” and cheers for Mr. and Mrs Handman.
