LIGHTING CHARGES.

GENERAL COMPLAINTS. In reply to a complaint from the Putaruru Town Board in regard to electric lighting charges, the Thames Valley Power Board wrote stating that the troubieman had checked the reading of the meters and they had been found correct. It was possible that previous readings had been too low, thus making recent readings appear abnormally high. If the next reading was somewhere within reason this would be the case.

The clerk pointed out that the present month’s bill was 15s. The bill complained of was £l2 for five months, which was double the average for the winter months. Mr. McDermott stated he had proved his shop meter to be 1068 units out. A test meter was installed, and cue meter read 12 units and the test meter 129 units.

Mr. Barr Brown: It seems to me they may have got the lighting and power lumped together. Mr. Lindsay: Even then one is 3id and the other 9d. The clerk: There is no doubt there is general complaint throughout the town.

A member: Their official seems to be the only satisfied person. Mr. Barr Brown: They are on the box seat, and if you give any cheek they can cut your light off. (Laughter. )

The chairman: I think we should follow it up and try and get the trouble cleared up. Complaints are very general. Mr. McDermott urged that the board should combine with Matamata in ” regard to representation. He thought if the matter was put before Mr. Price he would go into it thoroughly. The chairman pointed out it would never do to go past their own representative.

Mr. Barr Brown: Yes, we have never written to Mr. Anderson yet. He may be able to clear the whole trouble up. It was then decided to write and give details of hall bookings and meter readings, and state that complaints were general, and also to forward a copy of the letter to Mr. Anderson, representative of the district.
