CLEANING SPARK PLUGS.
A The best way to examine and clean rk plugs is to remove each one fend lay it on the bench. Place lithe porcelain end of the spark plug ttietal shell in the vice, and separate the porcelain from the shell with a {Wrench. By holding the nut in the »ice, all chances of breaking the porcelain due to the wrench slipping is jjtliminated. Complete each plug before dissembling the next one. After ■the porcelain is removed from the {Shell clean it and the shell proper, and examine the porcelain for cracks. Dtf any cracks are visible new porcelain must be provided. Assemble the
plug and then set the gap between the electrodes with the feeler or thickness gauge. In doing this remember that the electrode that is fastened to the shell is the only one that should be bent to get the correct gap distance. Never bend the centre electrode. Some care must be exercised in the assembly of the plugs to see that the copper gasket is properly located. When the plugs are finally installed it is Well to bear in mind that for high-compression engines the plugs should be screwed in more tightly than usual. Another thing to remember is that a perfect gasket is required between plug and cylinder head in order that the heat-controlling properties of the plug be retained.
