FOOTBALL.

Putaruru 20, Pacific 0. The above match was played on' No. 1 ground, Putaruru, and a game full of promise for the future ended in a victory for, Putaruru by 20. points to nil. The teams lined out as follows: Putaruru (all black). Fullback, Conaghan; threequarters, F. Brown, 1 R. Dunlop, Johnson; five-eight as, Paterson, Morton; half, W. Ross iter; Tover, Williams; forwards, W. Dunlop, G. Brown, Ensor, Newton, Elite, Allwood. Pacific (royal blue). —Fullback, R. Ellis; threequarters, Tanirau, Wheatley, Bellringer; five-eighths, Waretini, Bullot; half, Nuku; rover, Ronga; forwards, Spraggon, Koran, Shepherd, Otine, Hana, John and Barry. Eeferee: Mr, Graham.

Following a scrappy opening Ensor got over for Putaruru after a few minutes’ play. The blues retaliated after a fine punt down field by Ellis, but offside spoiled the movement. R. Dunlop failed from a penalty kick, and then Nhku sent Waretine and Tanirau away, but the latter was pushed to touch. The first quarter ended without further score. Putaruru 3 Pacific 0

The second quarter opened with a dash down the right wing by F. Brown, but a free to the blues gave relief. Conaghan with an overhead Mck let the blues in, and they were distinctly unlucky in not being able to touch down. The blues kept up the pressure mainly through the good work of Nuku, Waretine, Bullot and Wheatley, until a lob pass was intercepted by F. Brown within his own 25. Running to halfway Brown then kicked, and following fast, beat Ellis for the ball, and touched down near the posts. Paterson missed an easy kick. The blues again attacked following a nice centre kick by Bellringer, hut Conaghan and F. Brown rushed the ball back to halfway. Offside against Tanirau lost further ground, and Rolfe put in a solo dribble to near the line. Ellis secured, but his weak clearance was taken by F. Brown, who ran in far out, for Morion to fail with the kick. Half-time score:

Putaruru 9 Pacific 0 Following a free against Ensor, Pacific attacked strongly and F. Brown’s speed saved a certain try. Ensor, Rolfe and Dunlop relieved to the visitors’ half, where R. Dunlop just missed a drop from a free. Putaruru now set up a sustained attack, Morton, G. and F. Brown and Paterson showing up With good work. A free to the blues and two to Putaruru followed, Paterson failing from the last under the posts. Threequarter time:

Putaruru 9 Pacific 0 Rolfe shone out with a dribble following the restart, and later, after receiving the ball from Morton, ran strongly for the corner, but was overtaken. Paterson next dummied past several tacklers but lost his supports. Desultory play followed until Waretine brightened' matters with a clean cut in. While on defence the blacks were penalised, but Hana failed to find the bar. Hanirau next put in a determined sprint, fending off several tacklers. The black pack came back, however, and Rossiter cutting out the five-eighths, served F. Brown, who nearly got over. From the next line Put G. Brown got clean away and scored at the corner after a good burst of speed. W. Dunlop failed at goal. The blue tackling was now very weak, and on the right R. Dunlop and F. Brown made an opening for Morton, who got behind the posts. W. Rossiter failed to convert. After a short blue raid, in which Wheatley kicked to touch-in-goal, the blacks again attacked, and from scrambling play F. Brown ran in to the posts and converted. Time was then called with the score: Putaruru 1 converted try, 5 tries, 20 points; Pacific, nil. Arapuni 21, Tokoroa 0. Arapuni and Tokoroa met in their first match of the first round, the result being a win for Arapuni by 21 points (five tries, one goal and a potted goal) to 0. Tries were scored by Penny, McGallivray, Redfern, Powell and Richardson. Penny converted one try and McNamara kicked a splendid goal from the field. The game •was fast and interesting throughout. JThe forwards were fairly evenly matched, but the Arapuni backs

showed too much headwork for the Tokoroa backs, thus enabling them to score their five tries in an easy manner. ' McMacmara was easily the best back on the field, standing out on his own. The Tokoroa forwards showed to advantage in loose rushes, with A. McGlade and Wallace in the van. In the third quarter they kept Arapuni continually on the defensive and had hard luck in not scoring. During the second half D. McGlade had to retire owing to an injury to his knee, thus leaving Tokoroa a man short in the backs. Arapuni tried all they knew to make the game open, and with the ball among their backs they always looked dangerous. There was a great tendency on both sides to hold on to the ball and try to bullock a way through instead of passing out.

WAIKATO RUGBY UNION. Management Committee. The management committee of the Waikato Rugby Union met at Hamilton on Friday. There were present : Messrs. T. B. Booth (chairman), F. Quin (Waipa), B. Chapman (Putaruru), C. Mclntyre (Morrinsville), A. G. Yardley (Matamata), W. Udy, A. C. Cliffe (Hamilton), T. A. Cooper (Referee’s Association), C. B. Speight (treasurer), T. Clarkin (life member) and the sceretary (Mr. Thompson). Putaruru Request. The Putaruru sub-union wrote asking for a definition of the boundaries of the sub-unions. in the Waikato union’s territory. The secretary explained that he had replied that he could trace no record of boundaries. He had consulted with the previous secretary and he knew nothing of them. Mr. Yardley said the Putaruru boundaries as they concerned the Mats mata sub-union were clearly defined in the minutes of the Waikato Rugby Union. Much time had been given by various gentlemen In preparing the boundaries in general to the satisfaction of all sub-unions. It was decided that the secretary get in touch with Mr. McDavitt, who had had most to do with the boundaries. Poverty Bay Match. The Poverty Bay Union applied for a match with Wa i;. .o at Gisborne this season. i __-red until later in the season. Matamata v. Piako. The application of the Matamata sub-union for a match with Piako on King’s Birthday was objected to by Mr. Quin, who said he was against any sub-union entering upon an engagement on any day the Waikato rep. team was playing. A similar arrangement between Cambridge and Hamilton last year had acted detrimental to the Waikato fixture against King Country at Te Awamutu. The takings had only amounted to £l9. Mr. Yardley, in proposing that the application be granted, said the position of Matamata and Piako was quite different to that mentioned by Mr. Quin. Such a match as applied for would draw no one from attending the Waikato-Auckland game. Football was at a low ebb in Te Aroha and Piako wished the match to give them a fillip for the season. There was a community of interest between the two places, and with the Finlay Cup and rep fixtures coming on there would be very little chance of Matamata having another day available. Mr. Chapman, in seconding, said, although he would support the application under notice, he would be dead against any two sub-unions in Waikato being granted permission under similar circumstances. When Waikato is playing no tws sub-unions should be allowed to play. Mr. Udy said the applications should be considered on their merits. Mr. T. A. Cooper supported the application, stating that Matamata was out of the way a little and was trying to assist the game. It was decided to grant the right on the understanding that no men required by Waikato on that day shall be allowed to play against Piako. Huntly Football. It was decided to ask the Auckland Rugby Union to make applica- ' tion to the New Zealand Rugby Union for £25 for assistance in promoting Rugby football in the Huntly and Ngaruawahia districts. If the Auck-

land union was successful Waikato

would be willing to apply the grant for its purpose. Putaruru Account. An account was received from the Putaruru union for expenses of several players for an abandoned trial match last season. It was explained that the men had left Putaruru before they were notified that the match had been abandoned. It was decided to pay the cost of travelling from Putaruru to Hamilton but to repudia' e liability for the cost of assembling the men at Putaruru. School Football. It was decided to expend List year’s New Zealand Union’s grant for school football to the various subunions for distribution as follow : Putaruru £4, Raglan £4, Matamata £2 10s, Morrinsville £2 10s, Waipa £2, Cambridge £2. Delegates’ Report.

The delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Messrs. T. B. Booth and B. Chapman, reported on their visit to Wellington. Mr. Chapman stated that it was a somewhat light meeting and most of the work was routine, and did not directly concern Waikato greatly. A good list of rep fixtures had been arranged. One matter, however, which might concern the union was the grading of unions, Waikato having been classed “ B.” This was purely a move to group the unions for the arrangements cf fixtures. Objections had been raised by the Waikato delegates, but it was stated that the grading would not affect the unions in connection with any over-seas teams. The fixtures were approved, and the delegates were thanked for theii overtures. MORRINSVILLE RESULTS. Seniors. Kereone 13, United 5, Terriers 15, Tatuanui 3. Juniors. Tahuna 11, Kereone 7.
