TOKOROA.

Memorial Hall. The annual meeting of the trustees of the Tokoroa Memorial Hall was held last week. Those present were Messrs. J. E. West (chairman), J. Mossop, I. Carr Rollett, A. Sloper, W. Walsh, T. McLaughlan, H. Bryant, J. Campbell, L. McHale, L. J. G. Hamilton and L. Newell (secretary). The secretary presented the statement of accounts for the year, which showed a very satisfactory state of the hall finances. The receipts were £lO9 4s 4d and expenditure £Bl 9s 3d, which included caretaker’s salary, improvements to hall and general expenses. The mortgage on the hall stands at £350, while cash in hand and bank balance bring the available funds up to £BO 16s 2d. As all necessary action has never been taken with respect to the vesting of the hall in a responsible body of local representatives, and as the Matarawa Land Company, which is the mortgagee, was prepared to make the necessary transfer to such body of representatives, it was decided to form an incorporated society with rules, regulations and legal status as is provided for by law and to vest the hall property in such society. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and the secretary to interview the representatives of the Matarawa Land Compar' and also to get legal advice re the me. The trustees auth "’sed the committee to increase ’ie caretaker’s salary and also end > sed the secretary’s action in get'! g more seats so as to provide more seating accommodation. It was decided to build a porch over the back door and to make additions to the ladies’ dressingroom. It was decided to call tenders for the right to have a refreshment stall at the hall. The matter of smoking in the hall came up for discussion. It was decided that no smoking be allowed in the hall and that a notice to this effect be placed on the screen. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Hamilton for providing the hall with electric light free of charge, also to the chairman and the secretary for the capable manner in which they had carried out their duties during the past year. The following committee was elected for the ensuing year: Messrs. L. J. G. Hamilton (chairman), J. Campbell, L. McHale, H. Bryant, A. Sloper, T. McLaughlan and L. Newell (secretary). Post Office. The Post Office Committee met last week with a full attendance of members. The chairman reported that the Postal Department had approved of the site on the main Tokoroa road that was transferred from the site on the side road. The department has agreed to find £1 for £1 up to £65 toward the cost of the building. There has been some slight hitch regarding this but it is understood that it has been overcome and that the building will shortly be proceeded with. It is the intention of the committee to hold fortnightly dances in the hall to raise the necessary funds for the amount which the settlers will be required to find toward the building of the post office. Roads. The recent heavy rain played havoc with the newly-graded portions of the main road near Tokoroa. Many cars and lorries were unable to get through without assistance. Two Auckland lorries heavily laden with stores for Taupo became so well stuck that one had to be unloaded assisted by the nearby settlers. Among the goods unloaded was a crate of cheese, and as Tokoroa is noted for its cheese many eyes were cast on the crate to see the brand, and one can imagine the smile of satisfaction that went round when that brand spelled 11 Tokoroa.”
