HINUERA.
HALL COMMITTEE MEETING. Healthy Balance-sheet. The poor attendance of ratepayers at cue annual general meeting o± the Hinuera Hall and Ratepayers’ Association came as a shock to those who had attended the previous annual meeting, when a great deal of ratepayers’ important business was transacted. However, on Thursday evening there was a good attendance of the hall committee supporters, the ladies being largely represented. The balance-sheet disclosed a highlysatisfactory position, as will be seen by the remarks made by the chairman, Mr. D. Mclsaac. But for the purchase of a piano about £BO would have been paid off the bank overdraft, and it is the committee’s aim to lessen this burden by £lO during the ensuing year. Mr. Mclsaac briefly reviewed the past year’s work. He said that from a committeeman’s point of view the year had been one of activity and hard work. At the commencement of the year they had been unfortunate in losing the services of Mr. Hooper, the chairman, who had left the district, and Mr. Grimshaw, who had been unable to give the necessary amount of time to the committee. The vacancies were filled by' Messrs. R. Germann and W. Hammond, who had proved themselves very enthusiastic committeemen.
Referring to the balance-sheet, the chairman pointed out that the main source of revenue had been from dances, the amount being £6B 4s 2d. Of this the spinters’ ball committee had contributed £l2 4s 5d and the bachelors’ ball committee £ll. The remaining portion had been raised solely by the efforts of the committee. The pictures had realised £27 as rental, and hall hires £l2 7s 6d. On the expenditure side the piano (£45) had been the most outstanding item, while the interest on the overdraft, £27 10s 6d, was proving a heavy item. Taking everything into consideration the committee had experienced a very successful year, the bank overdraft being reduced by £34 Is Id. Continuing, Mr. Mclsaac referred to the activities of the committee. There had been quite a lot they would like to have done but their principle had been to keep expenses down as much as possible and reduce the bank overdraft. They had had the back of the hall boarded up, a light had been placed in the porch, and sand had been placed on the approach to the hall. The public library had also been placed in the building. They had been very fortunate in having a good ladies’ committee, who with the committeemen’s wives had given the hall committee a great deal of valuable assistance and had helped to make the dances the outstanding successes they had been. The efforts of Messrs. Tisch and Brown were reflected in the healthy state of the balance-sheet.
It was decided to re-elect last year’s committee and ladies’ committee as a whole. The committee reelected consisted of Messrs. W. Hammond, R. Germann, A. Rowe, B. Tisch, C. C. Brown, D. Mclsaac and H. Little ; auditor, Mr. W. Settle. The ladies’ committee consisted of : Committeemen’s wives and Mesdames Mhnzie, Swan, Misses Tisch and Germann. Mr. H. Setttle moved that the bank overdraft should in future be limited to £3so.—Carried. On the motion of Mr. H. Settle it was resolved that no charge should be made for religious services conducted in the hall on Sundays. It was decided to make a charge of 2s for the supper-room and 3s 6d for the hall for the evening for mid-week religious services. The music teacher is to be charged 3s 6d per day, but in the event of the committee requiring the hall other suitable provisions should be made.
A hearty vote of thanks to the committee, which was carried by acclamation, terminated the meeting. At the subsequent meeting of the committee the old officers were reappointed. Mr. Mclsaac made a strong appeal (Continued at Foot of Next Column)
for support by means of members’ subscriptions. On previous occasions there had been a very apparent lack of support in this direction. The amount was only ss, but it djd a great deal to lessen the burden of the bank overdraft.
