DEERSTALKING.

GOOD HEAD SECURED. -By Matamata Sportsman. Mr. W. W. Livingstone, of Matamata, returned on Saturday morning from a deer-stalking expedition in South Westland. The Matamata sportsman secured a particularly-heavy 16-pointer and also shot another, but the latter was in such rough country that he had to leave it.

Speaking generally regarding the country worked, Mr. Livingstone said it appeared to have been well culled and the deer seen .were generally ; good specimens. During the past month the .weather had been very bitter and conditions were most uncomfortable through .sno-w and rain, the rivers being practically in flood. The party, which consisted of Messrs. W. W. Livingstone (Matamata), R. Farrow (Waitoa) and P. H. Saxon (Tatuanui), nearly lost their carrier in crossing one river. The young man was carried into a whirlpool and was well tossed about before he was able to reach the bank. Mr. Livingstone said it was a very .close escape from drowning. Mr. Livingstone, in retrospect, said it was remarkable the people one met in an expedition of this kind. One man met “ going in ” was an Englishman who had his own private yacht in New Zealand waters and had his crew for carriers, etc. A member of another party had continued on from a shooting expedition in Tibet.

Messrs. Farrow and Saxon are still “ in,” Mr. Livingstone having to return on business.
