PETTY THEFTS.
“ HARD TO DETECT.” In the Putaruru Court last Saturday, before Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown and H. J. W. Scott, J.’s P„ John Gibb Hastings pleaded guilty to a series of thefts from a Putaruru boardinghouse. The police said Gibb had several aliases and that he had obviously gone from room to room, and purloined a wristlet watch valued at £5, the property of Rex Beardmore, a razor valued at 10s, the property of George Wallis, a similar-prized razor, the property of James Williams, and a pocket knife valued at 3s 9d, the property of George Clark. Such thefts were extremely difficult to detect. The bench remarked that accused was evidently a “ professional ” and sentenced him to three months in Mount Eden gaol.
