INTOXICATED MOTOR CYCLISTS.

FINES OF £5 IMPOSED. Incident on Kereone Road. “ Will you walk into niy parlour? ” said the spider to the fly. Constable Heeps assumed the former role when he invited John Wilson Reynolds, who called at the police station on Monday to look for his friend, Allen Calvert Clayton, to “ step inside." Reynolds stepped inside, but it was not into the parlour—it was into the cell. Both young men were charged before Messrs. W. T. Osborne and C. M. Gummer, J.’s P., at the Morrinsville Police Court on Tuesday with being drunk in charge of a motor cycle. Constable Heeps stated that the men were employed by Mr. Hyde on a farm at Kereone. On Monday they came into Morrinsville on a motor cycle owned by Clayton. They were in a state of intoxication when prepared to leave for home, but they wheeled the machine through the town. When some distance along the Kereone road Reynolds attempted to start the engine, which was, however, in gear and commenced to gather speed along the road. He managed to climb into the saddle, but was unable to control the machine and was thrown, being rendered unconscious. The pair were found by Mr. Hyde, who was returning by car from Morrinsville. A doctor was summoned and speedily diagnosed the men’s complaint. Although warned not to ride the motor cycle Clayton later mounted and rode to Mr. Hyde’s farm. Both men pleaded guilty.

The bench, in imposing fines of £5, and 7s 6d costs in the case of Clayfbn, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, said the offence was a very serious one, and in future more severe action would be taken. This class of offence was getting increasingly common and would have to be stopped.
