STOCK SALES.
MORRINSVILLE. A good yarding of fat and store sheep, with a slightly smaller offering of beef, came forward at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s sale at Morrinsville on Friday. There was a noticeable improvement in the market for lambs, while a slight rise was also recorded in the price of ewes. Beef made late rates, good quality lines being firmer than at last sale. A fine wellbred and excellent conditioned line of 100 Polled Angus-Here-ford steers sold on behalf of Mr. J. T. Hawke, Te Mimi estate, realised from £6 to £9 ss. The demand for pigs, of which there was a medium yarding, was poor. Few stores and fats changed hands, while disappointing bids were received for weaners. Prices were as follow: Beef.—Heavy fat bullocks, £l2 10s; lighter, £9 to £lO 7s 6d; heavy fat cows, £8 9s to £10; medium fat cows, £7 to £8 2s 6d; lighter, £5 17s 6d to £6 15s; forward conditioned, £4 to £4 12s 6d; fresh-conditioned stores, £3 to £3 11s; boners, £2 10s to £3; forward conditioned P.A. and Shorthorn store steers, £8 to £9 ss; others, £6 11s to £7 ss; well bred 18-months Hereford steers (on account of J. T. Hawke), £6 to £6 11s; Jersey heifer calves, best £2 17s 6d to £3 2s 6d, others £2 12s to £2 15s; bulls, heavy £4 10s to £6 10s, lighter £3 to £4; potters, £1 15s to £2.
Sheep.—Fat wethers, 24s 3d; heavy fat ewes, 23s to 25s 3d; fat lambs, 18s 3d to 21s; store shorn wether lambs, 16s 7d to 18s; smaller, 15s 2d; shorn store ewe lambs, 13s to 14s 6d; n.s. woolly lambs, 13s to 16s; 4 and 6-tootli ewes, 21s 9d; s.m. ewes, 15s 6d. Pigs.—Heavy baconers, £3 14s to £3 17s; light baconers, £3 4s to £3 8s; heavy porkers, £2 10s to £3 3s; light porkers, 28s to £2; best weaners, 8s to 13s, others, 2s to 6s.
MATAMATA. Dalgety and Company Ltd. conducted their usual fortnightly sale on Wednesday, when there was a large yarding of cattle offered, competition being very keen, particularly so in the ease of bullocks. An average yarding of pigs was disposed of at late rates. Prices were as follow:
Cattle.—Large fat cows £6 to £7 ; light fat cows £5 to £5 10s ; large forward store cows £4 to £4 15s ; light Jersey-cross heifers £3 to £3 16s ; one pen prime fat bullocks £lO 10s ; one pen Shorthorn four-year-olds £9 4s ; two pens P.A.-Hereford cross £9 ; pen of three-year-old steers £6 10s ; pen of two-year-old steers £4 6s ; bulls £2 10s to £5 10s.
Sheep (small yarding). Shorn store lambs 12s 5d to 13s.
Pigs.—Weaners 8s to 10s ; slips 10s to 15s ; empty sows 14s to 25s ; sows in farrow £1 15s to £2 15s.
WAIKATO MARKET REPORT. The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report, under date March 12:— ! Beef.—Prices continue to improve for both prime ox and cow beef, best ox making up to 34s per 1001 b and prime cow and heifer 28s to 295. With exporters still operating prospects look bright for high prices this winter. Fat Sheep.—There has been a good rise and prices are firm for all classes of fat sheep. Most of the yardings are small with strong competition, especially for ewes. Store Sheep.—A keen demand still exists for good breeding ewes, store wethers and good store lambs. Store Cattle. —Good yardings have been coming forward, with competition keen for grown and young steers. Good store cows are also wanted and there is a fair inquiry for in-calf Jersey heifers. Weaner Jersey heifers are slightly easier. Pigs. Competition is keen for baconers and porkers at improved prices, prime quality making equal to sid per pound. Good stores are wanted but weaners are still very low. Horses. —Good useful farm sorts are in demand, but big heavy horses are dull of sale. There is practically no demand for the light class. WEEKLY PRICES OF FAT STOCK FOR EXPORT. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board advises that the following prices are being offered for fat for export at March 17, 1928: “g. Canterbury (prices delivered at works). —Prime woolly lambs, 361 b and under lOd, 371 b to 421 b 9Ld, 431 b and over 9 d; second quality lambs, 9d. RETAIL PRICES OF N.Z. MEAT IN LONDON. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board has been advised by its London manager that the following retail prices were being quoted for New Zealand lamb and mutton in London on March 2, 1928: Lamb (per pound). Legs 14d,. shoulders 13d, loins 12d, necks breasts 6d. Wether Mutton (per pound).—Legs 10d, shoulders 9d, loins 9d, necks 7d, breasts 3d.
