LAST TRIBUTES.
The New Zealand Tablet of February 15 contains the following in memoriam reference to the late Mrs. John Silk, mother of Father Silk, of Matamata:—
It is our sad duty here to chronicle the death of Mrs. John Silk, which occurred at her residence, Kilconnell, Ireland, on February 2, 1928. As a Catholic she was an outstanding ■figure in that Island of Saints—a mother of 11 children, many of whom consecrated their lives to the service of the Church ; the youngest, Father D. V. Silk, is at present parish priest of Matamata, Auckland. Her husband and the 11 of a family are left to bemoan her loss. Of her nearest blood relations no less than 44 nuns and 7 priests were to be bereaved at her demise. On Wednesday, the Bth instant, a Solemn Requiem Mass was offered for the eternal repose of her soul at the Church of the Holy Angels, Matamata, by her son, Father Silk, in the presence of an overcrowded congregation. Father Curley (Huntly) was deacon, Father Dignan (Thames) sub-deacon, Father Bleakley (Hamilton) master of ceremonies. In the sanctuary was Right Rev. Dr. Liston (Coadjutor Bishop pf Auckland). In the choir were Fathers Taylor (Paeroa), Shore (Morrinsville), O’Flynn (Frankton), O’Carroll (Cambridge) and McHardy (Greenmeadows). The music was beautifully rendered by Mrs. John Montague, parish organist. To the relatives and friends of the deceased we tender our deepest sympathy in their time of sorrow.—R.l.P.
