The question as to what speed a horse can gallop at and still be under cor.trol was raised during the hearing of a motor case at the Waihi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. One witness, who claimed to have had a considerable deal of experience, said that he had seen a horse running at 40 miles per hour in the Old Country, and still under control. He had also seen horses on the Waihi roads travelling at the rate of 25 miles per hour, with an experienced man in the saddle, and under control. A Westport resident made an unusual find recently. When stumping he found under a stump a “ nest ” of half a dozen fish in the soil. The largest of the fish was about 4in in length, the smallest about 2.1 in and about as thick as a man’s small finger. They had large heads, a long round body and broad tail. When found they were quite dark in colour and apparently dormant, but on being put into water they became very lively, freely swimming about, while their colour became much lighter and almost mottled in appearance, Mr. G. Rogers, of Tarurutangi, has shown the Taranaki Herald some old factory returns which furnish an interesting comparison of the prices advanced for butterfat. The returns are all for the month of December. In 1909 the advance was 93d ; 1910, lOld ; 1911, lOid ; 1912, Hid; 1913, Is ; 1914, 10’,d ; 1915, Is 2d ; 1916, Is; 1917, Is; 1918, Is. Within Mr. Rogers’ recdllection summer butter was sold at 4id per pound and was carried to the store in a milk pan so that it would not run away. Since 1918, of course, much higher prices than those for the 10 years quoted have been received, but the cost of production has increased greatly.
