Lieutenant E. G. Moncrief has received notice of his promotion to take charge of the No. 1A area, Auckland. This means that Lieutenant Moncrief will shortly be leaving Morrinsville for the Queen City. Farmers can be sure of getting all spare parts .for International Harvester machinery from Ben Roberts, wheelwright and blacksmith, Tower road, the district agent, telephone 149.*
Mr. H. J. Pearse, postma.ster at Putaruru, has received notice of his transfer to Otaki on promotion. He will be succeeded by Mr. F. J. Pretsch, of Takaha, Nelson, who some years ago was stationed at Tirau.
Quite a novel rendezvous for a hawk was discovered by a Morrinsville farmer yesterday. He saw it rise from the ground close to his house and on investigating he found that at the spot was a hen’s nest, the eggs in which were quite warm. The hawk had evidently taken charge of the nest during the absence of the hen. A neighbour to whom the farmer related the incident suggested that the hawk was awaiting the return of the hen.—Morrinsville Star.
A good joke against pressmen was lold by Mr. Talbot, a member of the Highways Board (states the Poverty Bay Herald). Charles Peace, the notorious murderer, paused on his way to the scaffold, he said, and .hanked the warders for their treatment of him in gaol. After likewise hanking the chaplain for his services, he murderer turned to the* newspaper reporters assigned to witness lis demise, and with a significant look, remarked, “'We’ll meet again.”
Betty Compson plays the leading part in “ The Palace of Pleasure,” to be screened next Saturday. Included in the film is the entire third act of “ Carmen,” and the whole is a love story of sunny Spain. Edmund Lowe plays the part of the lover “ Ricardo.”*
