METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL
The services in connection with the Matamata anniversary were held on ! Sunday, December 12, when Rev. R. E. Fordyce preached to good congregations. The scholars of the school to the number of about 30 were grouped round the platform and under the conductorship of Miss North, sang their chosen hymns effectively and well. Solos were sung by Misses Thelma Devey, Hazel Hawes and Evelyn Ellery, and a psalrrt was 'recited by Niel Draper. The preacher spoke in the morning on Psalm 119, verse 105, showing the Bible as light reveals the darkness of sin, warns of danger, and acts as a guide, to the safety of the Heavenly Home. The text was illustrated on the blackblackboards. In the evening the preacher held the attention of his hearers while he spoke on the words from St. Mt. 23-37, “ As a hen gathereth her chickens under her wing, etc.” A hen, chickens and a bird of prey (all made of paper and fastened to the blackboard) served to impress the lesson that as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings and protects those who accept that shelter, so Jesus calls, commands, covers and comforts all who heed His invitation. The chick which would not heed its mother’s call was “taught by a bird of prey and destroyed, so sin destroys those who disregard the commands of Christ to follow Him. Miss H. Hawes was the accomk paniste. The fine singing by the children gave testimony to the .splendid training they had received.
Messrs. J. H. Hawes, senr., H. Lucas, G. Higgins and M. Bates formed the orchestra for the occasion.
