MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. K. Kenrick, S.M.) A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Putaruru last Thursday. UNLICENSED VEHICLE. S. Corbett, a native, was charged with plying for hire with a motor car in the Matamata county without having a license for that county. The police said that Corbett had a license from the Rotorua County Council, but in plying for hire in Matamata he was required to take out another from the Matamata County Council. The county inspector had complained that there were a number of unlicensed vehicles being used as taxis but it was difficult to catch them.
Mr. Carter, appearing for Corbett, said the latter thought he was still in the Rotorua county. He gave Maori friends a lift at week-ends from No. 8 camp at Maeraitai to Rotorua. Although Corbett was a taxi driver at Rotorua he was not following his business at the time. His friends simply paid for the benzine used on the trips. The magistrate said the practice was fairly common. Some drivers did other work besides taxi driving and made a pretty good thing out of the two jobs together. Corbett was fined £2 and eosts. HEAVY TRAFFIC BY-LAWS.
The first case taken by the Mata- ’ mata county inspector under the heavy traffic by-laws was heard when J. E. Corkill, of Putaruru, was charged with driving a vehicle of over two- torus without having a license under the heavy traffic by-laws. The inspector (Mr. W. J. Jordan) said any vehicle two tons or over was required to be licensed. Defendant’s lorry and load weighed by the loadameter was 2 tons 7 cwt. Mr. IJ.cwitt disputed the accuracy of the instrument used. The inspector said he had tested the instrument himself and Corkill had seen the weight registered. Corkill said the loadometer could not have been correct, but he had not had his lorry weighed since. The magistrate stated that he would treat the case as a test one. He must take the weighing instrument against defendant’s judgment. Corkill was convicted and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. UNDEFENDED CASES.
