BOWLING.

GOLDFIELDS STARS. The annual Goldfields Stars and Clothier Shield tournament was played at Paer&a on Saturday and Monday, 16 rinks competing. Among these were two each from Matamata and Morrinsville. The green was holding on the opening day but became much keener on Monday. Saturday’s conditions, however, seemed to be against many of the visiting players. The result of the tournament was a win for the holders, the Paeroa rink skipped by Purdie, which went right through without a loss. Pinder’s (Hikutaia) rink was in the final and led right up to the last head, on which Purdie required three to tie or four to win. He secured the major number amid great excitement. The last six heads were played under electric light.

The rinks from Matamata and Morrinsville did not do quite as well as expected, the players being unable to pick up the run of the green on the opening day. Each of the Matamata rinks secured three wins against four losses. The teams were : Coote, Mclntyre, Hawes, Buchanan (s), Carter, Oates, Crabb, G. .Stewart (s). Branch’s (Morrinsville) rink, composed of Yardley, S. Cornish, Bint, Branch (s), secured three wins, while that skipped by Moncrief

(Oates, Needham, Donald, Moncrief) was successful in two games. FUTURE VENUE. The Morrinsville club has given notice to move at the annual meeting* of the Goldfields Association that the annual Goldfields Stars and Clothier Shield tournament be rotary. At present the tournaments are held at Te Aroha and Paeroa alternately. PROGRESSIVE PAIRS. The Morrinsville club held an enjoyable progressive pairs tournament on Labour Day. Crowe (skip) and K. Buchan (lead), with 4J and 4 wins respectively, were successful. A progressive pairs competition played at Matamata on Monday was won by E. C. Banks (lead) and G. Hawes (s).
