MAINTENANCE CLAIM.
PAYMENT ORDERED. On Thursday in the Putaruru Court, G. McDonald (Mr. Portas) proceeded against her husband, H. McDonald (Mr. Carter) for maintenance, as previously ordered by the court. Mr. Carter explained that defendant was threatened with bankruptcy and had not had the money to fulfil the terms of the order. Since May his client had only earned about £SO, and it had cost him 30s per week to live. Twenty pounds had been stolen from, him in Auckland, so that only left him £3O. Mr. Portas: Have you sold any tools ? Defendant: Y'es, £3 5s worth. Mr. Portas : I suggest it is £2O worth. (No answer). Were you charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct in Victoria street, Auckland ? Defendant: No, it wasn’t Victoria street. (Laughter). You are only guessing. You can ask the police. I was robbed of £2O and complained to them, and they took me for breach of my prohibition order. Mr. Portas: Have you sold your house ? Defendant: No, I am hanging it up. Magistrate: You can’t do that. You will finish up in goal if you disobey orders. Eventually McDonald was ordered to find the sum of £22 before the court rose, or in default to serve one month in Mt. Eden.
