CLOSING OF WAIROU RIVER.
FOR FISHING PURPOSES. Acclimatisation Society’s Decision.. At a meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society at Morrinsviile on Friday evening the point was stressed that very poor fishing was obtainable in several of the South Auckland streams and it was suggested that the only way to effect an improvement in this direction was to close one or two of these streams periodically. Mr. Going said the state of the fishing in the Waihou and Waimakariri rivers was now simply deplorable and the closing of these would be the means of improving the fishing there. They should then be stocked with Taupo fry. Rotorua fry was no good now as they were now a mongrel fish and played out. One or two streams should be closed each year. The chairman also suggested that the Waiomou. which ran into the Waihou near Okoroire, should he also closed. Mr. N. Johnson said he would like added that the ranger should report upon the closed rivers, with the prospects of obtaining' food and Taupo fry or yearlings. It was decided that these streams be closed for three seasons and that a report from the ranger he asked for.
