“STAR THISTLE.”
A SERIOUS MENACE. "We learn from the officer in charge of the Department of Agriculture, Wellington, that a sample of thistle sent :o tide Department from Hawke’s Bay for identification purposes is “ star ** thistle (c ntaurea calcitrapa), a European tiennial weed now fairly widely spread throughout New Zealand. In Australia it is looked upon as a very serious menace, but in New Zealand it has s o far net done a great deal of harm. The Department of Agriculture advises cutting the plants close to the ground, before they flower. 'Star thistle is included in the third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act. It is now fairly established on some Hawke’s Bay river-beds and roads, where it is likely to spread widely. Judging from its performance in Australia, where it has cost a large sum of money to keep it in check, and tihe favourable conditions to growth in districts in New Zealand, farmers would be well advised to keep it from becoming established.
