NOXIOUS WEEDS CONTROL.

BETTER SYSTEM WANTED. Movement for Legislation. With, the object of obtaining legislation for the better control and eradication of noxious weeds a conference of local bodies was held in Taranaki, and the decisions of this conference were forwarded, to all local bodies and their support solicited. Among the resolutions adopted were the following:— “That fines be increased and offences made to carry continuous penalties and department’s cost of clearing land be made a first charge thereon. That when weeds in Crown land become a menace, such land, be leased at nominal or no rental in consideration of tenant clearing same. That all seed crops be inspected and certified clean before harvesting. That all county inspectors be appointed noxious weeds ’nspectors.” During a discussion by the Matamata County Council Mr S. OET. Judd he thought a noxious weeds board on the same basis as rabbit boards, with power to rate, would do good. ■ Mr W. H. Allen said blackberry and ragwort would have to be dealt with, otherwise many people could not remain on their farms. Mr H. Rollett said Crown lands were the worst. A few farmers were negligent, but the majority tried to keep their farms clean. Further discussion was deferred, copies of the circulars to be sent to members meanwhile.
