FARMERS’ FERTILISERS.

EFFORT TO CHEAPEN. Reference to an effort that may be made to cheapen fertilisers was included in the address of Mr. A. E. -Missen, outside organiser of the N.Z.C.D.C., Ltd., at Matamata reV cently, Mr. Missen stating that the company was endeavouring to evolve a scheme to that end. Mr. F. Hughes (director) referred to the value of manures ; they would get better results from a scrub herd on topdressed land than from a good herd where the land was not topdressed. A Voice : Not a bit of it. Mr. Hughes : X can prove it. The company had intended to order basic slag for sale to the suppliers, but these manures had been monopolised this year. He .thought, however, that the company could arrange for . the supply of manures. One of the directors suggested that the company should buy the Horotiu freezing works. That was only a suggestion, but when they bore in mind .that a farthing per pound deduction would yield £40,000 they would see that it was feasible for the company .to go on with some project to cheapen ) manures. The company was hoping to overcome the difficulties in the way at present. The directors had written Home to Mr- W. C. Motion to investigate prices on the Continent. Mr. Stirling was quite keen on the question, and it was hoped to do something effective. (Applause.) Mr. J. Pohlen moved that the meeting give its support, to any decision the directors might take in the direction of cheapening manures.—Seconded by Mr. Young and carried. Mr. P. Finlavson : If you can reduce prices by £2 per ton you will get our support. (Laughter.) Mr. Missen considered that financing farmers for manures was far more important than financing them for dairy stock.
