7® V 1886 #e 'lftarch, of (Above) The first “ Anchor ” Butter Factory opened in 1886. (At the right) The Churn Room at the Waharoa Factory, the Largest Co-operative Butter Factory in the Word. One day’s churning has prod :ed 45,4721 b of Butter. In 1886 the first “ Anchor ” Factory was built for Mr. Reynolds at Pukekura. This building (illustrated above) still stands. Just about the same time a great Industrial Exhibition was held in Melbourne. Some samples of “ Anchor ” Butter were sent over to compete with the Australian product. The cabled result was : “ ‘ Anchor ’ Butter from Auckland, First Prize.” r ra ■ 1 ' Mil * 10*26 M V»r ; , 1 4lt From that small beginning the Dairying Industry in the Auckland Province has developed by leaps and bounds, assisting in its progress the Province’s rapid rise to prosperity. Last year 15 “ Anchor ” Factories churned 50,426,6151 b of Butter, while the Company’s operations generally resulted in a circulation in the Auckland Province of some £5,000,000.
