BOWLED OVER BY CHEESE.
CREW AND DOCKERS. Fumes Too* Strong. Mr. A. Dakin, of Matamata, hands us the following “ tit-bit ” from Home which appeared in the journal the People:— “ Keep the lid on,” ofttimes a jocular dinner table remark accompanying the exhibition of the everpopular gorgonzola, could not be applied in the case of a cargo of wonderful cheese which arrived at Bootle, near Liverpool. Tons of the strongest cheese ever sent out of New Zealand were stored in the s.s. Suffolk. When unloading operations were commenced it is alleged .that the fumes arising from the cargo knocked out of action many brawny dockers and' members of the crew. The second officer was surprised when the men faced him on deck and made the complaint. The officer went down below decks to investigate. He had not been long- in the hold before he too was so overcome' by the fumes that he was rendered unconscious. The chief epgi;' "sr went to the rescue and was alss overcome. They were eventually : escued, and l the Bootle ambulance ..as summoned. Efforts were m.-de by artificial respiration to bring the men round, and this proved successful in the case of the chief engineer, but the second officer had to be taken to the hospital, where he recovered, but was detained.
