YOUTHFUL ESCAPADE.
MAORFS FOOLISH LAPSE. Steal Rugs and Shirts. Three well-dressed young Maoris, named William Turei, George Ure Thomas Webber, appeared before Mr. W. G. Kenrick, S.M., in the Putaruru Court last Thursday to answer a charge of stealing* from the store of Mr. Victor Johnson at Tokoroa on May 8. According to the police evidence the three accused were all steady men and were employed at the forestry camp at Tokoroa. On the Saturday in question they came in to an entertainment in the local hail, and afterwards visited Johnson’s store. There were about ten people in the store at the time, and while soft drinks were being served Turei took a shirt, Ure a bush rug and shirt, and Webber a blanket. The goods had been recovered, but were damaged, and defendants had admitted the theft without giving trouble. A fine of £3, plus £2 7s <sosts, was imposed on each, and the value of the good's in each case was ordered to be refunded to Johnson-
