NOXIOUS WEEDS.

LOCAL BODIES’ CONFERENCE. Matamata Council Views. With the object of obtaining legislation for the better control and eradication of noxious weeds, a conferenceof local bodies was held in Taranaki, and the decision of this conference forwarded to all local bodies and their support solicited. Among the resolutions adopted by the conference were the following:— That the principle that the adrninistratio'n of the Noxious Weeds Act remain in the hands of the Agricultural Department be affirmed. That definition of clear be amended ,to read as it originally stood in the Noxious Weeds Act of i. 908. That fines be increased and offences made to carry continuous penalties and Department’s cost of clearing land be made a first charge thereon. That when weeds on f Crown land become a menace such Itfnd be leased at nominal or no rental in consideration of tenant clearing same. That all seed crops be inspected and certified clean before harvesting. That all information as to best means of eradicating weeds be circulated by the Department amongst settlers. That all county inspectors be appointed noxious weeds inspectors. These recommendations came before the Matamata County Council on Friday. “ Each member would want a month to go throug-h that circular,” said Cr. J. Pohlen. Cr. S. H. Judd thought a noxious weeds board, on the same basis as rabbit boards, with power to rate, would do good. Or. W. H. Allen said 1 he thought the Taranaki people were to be congratulated. The blackberry and ragwort would have to be dealt with, otherwise many people could not re—--1 main on their farm;:. | Cr. H. Rollett pointed out that the j Crown lands were the worst; a few farmers were neglig-ent, but the majority tried to keep their farms clean. Further discussion was deferred for a future meeting, and in the meantime copies of the circulars he sent to memi bers.
