PUTARURU CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. I At the monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce, held on Monday, the following members were present: Messrs. F. C. Barnett (chairman), J. W. Barr Brown, A. Cosslett, A. C. Thompson, A. R. Vosper, C. C. = Neal, C. Snell, J. W. F. Scott, W. P. ( Benton, G. G. Griffiths, and A. H. I Dukeson, junr. (secretary). £ POLICE STATION. J A discussion on the question of the proposed new police station revealed 3 the fact that some local builders had £ considered that they had been so hum- 1 bugged in the past by the department £ that they did not bother to tender in 1 reply ,to the recent advertisement for fresh tenders. I On the motion of Messrs. Barr i Brown and A. R. Vosper it was decid- i ed to write to the Minister for Justice i asking for information, and also to 1 communicate with Mr. Hockly on the matter. -i TOWN LIGHTING. 1 i Mr. Griffiths pointed out the urgent ; need for further lights in the town ’ and after discussion it was decided, , on the motion of Messrs. Griffiths and Barr Brown, to apply to the county council, asking that extra lights be provided at the corner of Kensington street and Marchant street, at .the in- ; tersection of Duke and Princes street, by the old factory corner, at the comer of Margaret street and the Great South road, in Arapuni road, and at the end of Taupo road near the railway cottages. FORESTRY WORK. On the suggestion of Mr. Barr Brown it was decided to invite Mr. E. Jones, of the New Zealand Perpetual Forests, to address the chamber on tree-planting. The secretary reported that he had secured a promise from Mr. S. J. Parker to address members on a subject of interest. . RUBBISH DUMP. Mr. S. C. Snell asked what the chamber had done in regard to obtaining a dump for tire town. At present the town was in the peculiar position of having much rubbish and no dump. He urged that a dump be provided, and that the county council he approached in the matter. Mr. H. J. W. Scott: Did not the council erect a sign ? Mr. S. C. Snell: Yes, they did. It read: “No rubbish to be deposited here.” (Laughter). An explanation was given re the progress of what had been done to date, and it was decided that the secretary approach Mr. J. R. O. Lochhead, and ascertain what had been 1 done by the Domain Board, and then to write to the county council on the matter. “PRINCE’S POND.” Mr. Snell urged .that the council be approached in regard to the pond in Princes street. At the moment it was a plague spot, and a disgrace to the town. j On the motion of Messrs. Snell and Barnett it was decided that urgent representations be made to the council asking for filling to be commenced at an early date. WAIHOU BRIDGE. ’ | Mr. Coslett suggested that the Waihou bridge needed attention. Two accidents had occurred during the past week, and the rails were down. Mr. Barnett pointed out that scrub on, the corner obscured the view, and it would improve matters if it was cleared. On the motion of Messrs. Thompson and Cosslett it was decided to draw ! the attention of the county council to the matter.
