FARMERS’ UNION.

MATAMATA BRANCH. A meeting of the Matamata branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Friday evening, there being present : Messrs. H. Rollett (chairman), S. Gunn,. A. and E. Bowler, J. Cranswick and the secretary (Mr. B. B'.ennerhassett). PETROL TAX. Mr. A. Bowler spoke in favour of the proposed petrol tax, which tended to tax owners according to the use made of cars. Mr. Rollett brought out the interesting point that the unfortunates who had to use soft “ mud ” roads used more benzine and would be penalised. Mr. Bowler moved that the branch favours a petrol tax in preference to an increase in other forms of motor taxation. Mr. J. Cranswick seconded.—Carried. It was facetiously suggested that Mr. Rollett should get the Peria riding roads “ fixed up.”
